Against war and sanctions

On 28January 2012, anti-war protesters rallied in front of the U.S. embassy in London. They demonstrated against both war and sanctions in Iran and Syria. This demonstration was initiated by the Stop the War Coalition, which has gained a worldwide reputation for its mass mobilisation against the wars on Afghanistan and Iraq. This report is not only projecting the demonstration but also touches upon the behind-the-scene controversies amongst Iranian activists of various convictions. Some Iranian activists criticised the Stop the War Coalition's omission of the democratic struggle of the Iranian people. Addressing such concerns, John Rees, co-founder of the Stop the War Coalition, argues that the aim of the anti-war movement is to oppose foreign military intervention and sanctions. By so doing, space would be provided for people inside the respective countries to freely decide on their fate. He also expressed sympathy for the democratisation movement in Iran. Comments: | |
